June 6, 2018 : High School ReflectionHigh school. For some, hearing this brings anxiety, fear, anger, glory, a sigh, or an SMH perhaps. For me, it brings me back to an incredible 4 year journey filled with many 2 am or 4 am nights, a load of "WAIT I CAN'T SEE", heartbreak, drama, pride, failed calculus tests, 2s on my AP test score, and game after game of warming up the bench. Of course those aren't my best take aways; I'll never forget the club I started, the friends I've made and forced to join my club, the enemies who taught me that I don't have to make everyone happy, and the teachers and staff that have taught me so much about life and myself. To them, I extend the biggest thank you. All these people aided in my own self discovery and the value of figuring out who I am is worth more than gold. I will be breaking down my years from being a freshie to being a senior who didn't want to leave Galileo behind. This is my story... well... at least a summary of it. Fall 2014 : The 1st Day Of Freshman Year The 7:55 bell rings and I head to my first class. I already knew where it was because I scouted out my route to my classrooms. There was no way I was going to look like a lost child. I EVEN WROTE MY CLASSES ON MY ARM!!! (#swimmerthings). On my way out of my 2nd period, I told the teacher "I don't care if I fail your class, I just want to learn." He stopped me and told me I wouldn't fail. That man is Rivera. Fast forward to some random time in the year, I ask him about how I should break up with my boyfriend. He tells me to watch 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover. I didn't understand it when and I looked at him like what??? but I kind of get it now, not ready, kind of. My first Song & Yell was so funny; I think we did a Lion King thing. It was bad compared to the seniors. Man Seniors are cool. I met a lot of people that year, both smart and dumb and even some that called my bluff. I'm not super smart and they saw that. Oh and I played bench for JV volleyball, Varsity for basketball, and jumped F/S for Track. Sophomore Year 2015-2016 I took my first AP class, AP World. EZest class ever. All we did was read, take notes, watch John Green, and take quizzes and test. Cossey hated my hates because they had "no system" to it which I disagree; indenting because a topic relates to another topic works. Then indenting because you found something that relates to that something you indented. And then maybe a 3rd indent if it really falls into that. I chose to play JV basketball this year even though I could play varsity because it offered more playing time; Even though the coaches were bad, I learned a lot. I learned how to be a leader and that isn't something to take for granted. This year, I joined the shadowing program. So what this means is that I had an 8th grader following me all day or half a day to get a feel of the school. It's super fun and I recommend everyone to try it. Nothing really happened this year. Jump To Junior Year 2016-2017 GET INVOLVED! GET INVOLVED! GET INVOLVED!!!! I joined a bunch of things like the School Site Council (SSC) and the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA). It's a great time to really start building those connections you're going to need when applying to colleges, scholarships, or summer programs. It's also one way to make high school more memorable. Senior Madness, Senior Sadness 2017-2018 My last year on the bench and on the court for varsity volleyball, my last year of jumping long and triple, my last year of SSC, PTSA, and most importantly, my last year at Galileo. Galileo is a gem in a pretty murky pond. The diversity in students and school spirit is insane. You have both extremes; you have the people who would rather be anywhere else besides there and you have the people who would go above and beyond for the school. I'm so grateful that I've gotten to meet so many people scattered throughout the spectrum. The memories I've made with students, faculty, staff, teachers, whatever you want to call them, I wouldn't trade them for the world. |

Grand Canyon with No Barriers USA, Grand Canyon Youth, & A Bunch of Strangers
Reflection I wrote a reflection for the organization and for donors and sponsors. For the full story, click HERE. Here is my favorite prompt: THIS IS A STORY ABOUT SOMEBODY, ANYBODY, EVERYBODY, AND NOBODY. Somebody, Anybody, Everybody, and Nobody went rafting together. Everybody was so excited. Somebody was hoping to get something deep and meaningful out of the experience. Nobody was initially scared to be left out because Everybody agreed that wouldn’t happen. But Everybody knew that Anybody could sometimes have those feelings. On the River, there were times that Everybody assumed that Somebody would do a certain task. Anybody could have done it. But Nobody did it. Of the 4 characters on the trip, which one do you relate with? Write the ending to this story. -Told by Erin Willy |
Date: 07/14/17 - 07/25/17
Location : Grand Canyon : 6000 ft under A huge thank you to all my sponsors, Grand Canyon Youth, and No Barriers USA for this once in a life time opportunity. Going into this trip, I knew no one. But over the course of 9 days, I couldn't bare to say good bye. I learned so much about the history of the Grand Canyon and the natives. After learning about how tourism negatively affects the soundscape and the integrity of the land, I want to more conscious of how my tourism affects the land. I would never trade this experience for anything in the world. I met some of the most amazing people and made so many memories arguing about how chewy bacon is the best, pooping in buckets, and falling off a boat. I miss the starry skies and I miss these amazing people. |
